Last year, Luis (8 yrs.) had surgery to correct a speech impediment, but he started out the school year at Oasis very timid. He was so afraid of being made fun of that he barely participated the first couple of weeks. Luis’ second grade teacher, Eloísa Gaitan, sat down with his parents who were considering moving Luis to first grade since he was struggling so much. She asked them if they would first encourage him to participate more.
The next day, Luis came into class and gave his teacher a big hug, promising her he would work very hard in her class if she would give him another opportunity to stay in second grade. Luis’ English teacher also spoke with him and since then, Luis has been showing significant improvement in his behavior and overall progress. Though his progress is slow, he is advancing! His classmates encourage and help him, and now he participates consistently.
